Taxus brevifolia

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Pacific yew is a small evergreen tree. It lives in the Pacific Northwest. This area includes parts of Alaska and California. It also grows in Idaho and British Columbia. This tree likes to grow in wet places. It can grow in the shade or in the sun.

This tree grows very slowly. Sometimes the inside of the trunk rots. This makes the tree hollow. Because of this, it is hard to count the rings. The rings help people find the age of a tree. The bark is thin and scaly. It can be red or purplish-brown. The leaves are dark green and flat. They grow in two rows on the stem.

The tree has a special way to make seeds. It makes a red, berry-like part called an aril. This aril is soft and bright red. It covers a single hard seed. Birds like to eat these red arils. The birds spread the seeds in their droppings. This helps new trees grow in new places.

Be very careful with this tree. The leaves, bark, and seeds are poisonous. Do not eat them. However, scientists use parts of the tree to make a drug. This drug is called paclitaxel. It helps treat some types of cancer.
