Podocarpus are green plants that stay green all year. They are called conifers. Most grow as tall trees, but some are small shrubs.

Some species grow very high. Their bark can be scaly or peel off in strips.

These plants have special cones. The female cones are very unique. At first, they have small scales. As they grow, the scales swell and fuse together. This makes a bright, fleshy part that looks like a berry.

This fleshy part is called a receptacle. It holds the seed at the top. Birds love to eat these colorful cones. When birds eat them, they spread the seeds in their droppings. This helps new plants grow in new places.

You can find Podocarpus in many parts of the world. They grow in Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America. Long ago, they lived on a giant land called Gondwana. As that land broke apart, the plants moved to humid areas. Today, people grow them in parks and large gardens. One type even won a special garden award.
