Most yews are small trees or shrubs. They have many branches. Their leaves stay green all year long. These leaves grow in a spiral shape. They often look twisted at the bottom.

Yews make seeds in a special way. The male parts look like long catkins. They let out pollen in early spring. The female parts are very small. A soft, juicy part grows around the seed. This part is called an aril. The aril is bright and sweet. Birds love to eat these juicy parts. When birds eat, they drop the hard seeds. This helps new plants grow in new places.

You must be careful with yew seeds. The seeds are highly poisonous. They contain poisons called taxine and taxol. These can be dangerous to humans. Most yew species live in warm or temperate zones. There are only a few species in the southern hemisphere. Scientists use DNA to study how they grow. This helps them see how yews relate to other trees.
