Podocarpaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Podocarpaceae is a large family of plants. These are mostly conifers. A conifer is a type of plant that often has needles for leaves. Most of these plants stay green all year long. They include about 201 species of trees and shrubs.

You can find them mostly in the Southern Hemisphere. Many grow in New Zealand, Tasmania, and New Caledonia. Some also grow in South America. A long time ago, a big land called Gondwanaland held these areas together. When that land broke apart, the plants spread out and changed. This helped make many new species.

Most members of this family have fleshy seed cones. A seed cone is the part that holds seeds. These cones are soft instead of being hard and woody. Most of the family has these soft cones. Only two groups, Pherosphaera and Saxegathaea, do not.

One plant in this family is very rare. It is called Parasitaxus usta. It is a parasitic gymnosperm. This means it lives on and takes food from another plant. It lives on New Caledonia. It grows on a plant called Falcatifolium taxoides.
