Conifers are a group of woody plants. Most are trees or shrubs. They are often evergreens. This means they stay green all year. Many have thin leaves like needles.

These plants use cones to make seeds. A cone is a special part for reproduction. Most trees have male and female cones on one tree. The wind carries pollen from male cones to female cones. This is called wind pollination. Later, the female cones grow seeds. Many seeds have wings to help the wind carry them.

Conifers can be very big or very small. The coast redwood is the tallest tree. It can grow very high. The pygmy pine is very small. It is often less than 30 cm tall.

Some conifers live in very cold places. They have special ways to survive. Their cone shape helps snow slide off. A waxy coating on their needles keeps water inside. They also make a sticky liquid called resin. This resin flows into wounds. It traps bugs and seals the wood. This helps the tree stay healthy.
