Gymnosperm

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Gymnosperms are a group of woody plants. They make seeds to grow new plants. The name means "naked seed." This is because their seeds are not inside a fruit. Instead, the seeds grow on leaves or scales. Many of these scales form a cone.

There are over 1,000 kinds of gymnosperms. Conifers are the biggest group. This group includes pines and cypresses. Most conifers are evergreens. They use the wind to move pollen.

Other gymnosperms look very different. Cycads look like small palm trees. There is also a tree called Ginkgo. It has leaves shaped like fans. Some plants in this group even live on other plants.

People use gymnosperms for many things. We use wood from pine and cedar for lumber. We also use them to make paper. Other parts can make soap, varnish, or perfume. These plants have been around for a very long time. Some fossils show they existed 383 million years ago.
