Progymnosperms were a group of very old plants. They are now extinct, which means they do not live anymore. These plants were woody. This means they had hard parts like wood. They did not use seeds. Instead, they used spores to make new plants. Spores are tiny bits that help plants grow.

These plants helped make the first true trees. One group was called Aneurophytales. They lived a long time ago. Some of them had no leaves. Other types had parts that looked like fronds. A frond is a large, leafy part of a plant. Later, a group called Archaeopteridales made the first very large trees.

These plants had special parts to move water. They had xylem and phloem. Xylem carries water through the plant. Phloem carries food. They also had a vascular cambium. This is a part that lets the plant grow. Some groups had wood that was very dense. We call this pycnoxylic wood. These plants were the ancestors of many plants we see today. They led to the first seed plants.
