Long ago, new plants grew on land. These plants lived in the Devonian period. One group of these plants is called Trimerophytopsida. People also call them trimerophytes.

These plants were very important. Scientists believe they were ancestors. An ancestor is a family member from a long time ago. These plants helped ferns grow later. They also helped seed plants evolve. To evolve means to change over a long time.

For a long time, scientists grouped many plants together. They called them Psilophyta. But then, they found more fossils. These new fossils showed the plants were not all the same. A scientist named Banks suggested a change in 1968. He wanted to split the big group into three smaller ones. One of these groups was the Trimerophytina.

Different people use different names for these plants. Some call them Trimerophyta. Others call them Trimeropsida. One group of these plants is called Psilophyton. These plants are part of the history of life on Earth.
