Cooksonia was a group of very old land plants.

They lived a long time ago. These plants lived from the Silurian period until the Early Devonian. Most fossils were found in Britain. People first found them in 1937.

These plants were very small. They were only a few centimeters tall. They did not have leaves, flowers, or roots. Instead, they had simple stems. These stems branched into two parts. At the end of each stem was a small pod. We call these pods sporangia.

The sporangia held spores. These spores helped the plant make new plants. Some sporangia were shaped like little trumpets. They had a tiny lid that would fall off to let the spores out.

Cooksonia is very important to science. It was one of the first plants to have vascular tissue. This is a set of parts that carries water through the plant. Some fossils show a dark stripe in the stem. This stripe was the first way plants moved water. This helped them grow on land. Some species were so small they might have needed other plants to help them eat.
