Tempskya was a tree fern from a long time ago. It lived during the Cretaceous period.

This plant had a very strange way of growing. It did not have one solid trunk. Instead, it had many stems joined together. A thick layer of adventitious roots grew around the stems. Adventitious roots are roots that grow from parts of a plant other than the main root. These roots made a "false trunk." This trunk helped the plant stand up. It also helped the plant soak up water.

Most tree ferns have large leaves at the very top. Tempskya was different. Small leaves grew from many spots on the trunk.

Scientists think we can learn how it grew from fossils. A young Tempskya likely started with one stem. That stem would then branch out into many parts. Later, some stems might rot away. The roots would still hold the plant up.

Tempskya lived in wet places. It grew near rivers and wetlands. Fossils have been found in many lands. We have found them in Japan and the Czech Republic. We also found them in Argentina and Australia.
