Pando is a very special tree in Utah.

It looks like a big forest of many trees. But it is actually one single living thing. It is a clonal organism. This means all the parts are genetically identical. This happens because they share one huge root system.

Pando has about 47,000 stems. These stems look like separate trees. They are called ramets. Pando is the largest tree in the world by weight. It weighs about 13.2 million pounds. It is also the largest by landmass. Scientists think Pando is very old. Some estimates say it is 16,000 years old. Individual stems do not live very long. They usually live only 100 to 130 years. When a stem dies, the roots make a new one. This way of growing is called suckering.

People work hard to keep Pando safe. They use tall fences to protect it. These fences stop deer and elk from eating new growth. This helps the tree stay healthy for a long time.
