These trees grow in high mountains. You can find them in California, Nevada, and Utah. One tree is named Methuselah. It is one of the oldest living things on Earth.

These trees have bright orange-yellow bark. Their needles are dark green. Some needles stay green for 45 years! The name "bristlecone" comes from their cones. These cones have small prickles on them. When the cones are ripe, they let out seeds. The wind carries the seeds to new places. A bird called a Clark's nutcracker also helps. The bird hides seeds in the ground. Some of those seeds grow into new trees.

These trees like harsh places. They often grow in rocky soil where other plants cannot live.

As the trees get very old, they may look twisted. A tiny strip of living tissue may connect the roots to the branches. Even after they die, their wood lasts a long time. Some dead trees stay standing for 7,000 years.
