It is a long-living species found in high mountains. You can find these trees in California, Nevada, and Utah. They are known by many names, like the western bristlecone pine. These trees are very special because they can live for a very long time. In 1987, Nevada even named it their state tree.

One tree named Methuselah is famous for being incredibly old.

These trees have a very unique way they work.

Their needles are deep green or blue-green and grow in groups of five. Some of these needles stay green for 45 years! The tree has bright orange-yellow bark that is thin and scaly. As the tree gets older, it may look gnarled and stunted. Often, only a tiny strip of living tissue connects the roots to the branches. This helps the tree survive even when much of it has died.

Scientists have studied these ancient trees to learn their secrets.

A researcher named Tom Harlan studied a tree in the White Mountains. He measured it in 2010 and found it was 5,062 years old. That would make it the oldest known living non-clonal organism on Earth. However, the exact location of that tree is now a secret. Another way to find the age is by counting annual rings. This is done using a tool called an increment borer.

There are many interesting facts about where they live.

These pines grow in large, open stands rather than thick forests. They often live in harsh, rocky dolomite soils. This is a place where most other plants cannot grow. In California, they live in the White Mountains and the Inyo Mountains. In Nevada, they grow in many high ranges, including the Ruby Mountains. They are very good at growing on new, open ground.

Learning about these trees helps us understand nature better.

You might know how wind carries things like seeds or leaves. The wind helps spread bristlecone seeds across the mountains. A bird called Clark's nutcracker also helps by hiding seeds in the ground. Some of these seeds grow into trees with many trunks. Even when the trees die, their wood stays around for a long time. Some dead trees can last for 7,000 years next to the living ones.
