It is located in the Fishlake National Forest within Sevier County. While it looks like a forest, it is actually one single tree. This is called a clonal organism because all its parts are genetically identical. Pando is famous for being the largest tree in the world. It holds this title by weight and by landmass. It is also the largest aspen tree on Earth.

This massive tree works in a very unique way. It has about 47,000 stems that look like separate trees. These individual stems are called ramets. They are all connected by one huge root system. When a stem dies, the roots grow a new one. This process is called suckering. It allows the tree to keep living even as old parts die. Most stems only live for 100 to 130 years. The roots keep the whole system alive for much longer.

People first identified Pando in 1976. Jerry Kemperman and Burton V. Barnes discovered it. Later, in 1992, researchers Michael Grant, Jeffrey Mitton, and Yan Linhart studied it more. They described Pando as a single male aspen clone. Michael Grant gave the tree its name. He chose "Pando," which is Latin for "I spread." In 2008, a team of scientists used genetic sampling to prove Pando was one single organism. This confirmed everything the first researchers had found.

There are many amazing facts about Pando's size and age. It weighs an estimated 13.2 million pounds. The tree spans a huge area of land. Its height ranges from 8,900 feet to 9,098 feet above sea level. Scientists have many different ideas about how old Pando is. Some estimates say it is between 9,000 and 16,000 years old. This is because the roots are much older than the stems. It has lived through many different changes in the Earth's climate.

Protecting Pando is a very important job for many groups. People use 8-foot fences to keep deer and elk away. These animals might eat the new growth that the tree needs. In 2024, cattle grazing in the area ended to help the tree. The Fishlake National Forest works with groups like the Friends of Pando. They use tools like GPS collars and cameras to watch the wildlife. These efforts help ensure that this ancient living thing stays healthy. We can learn a lot about nature by watching how Pando survives.
