The giant sequoia is one of the most amazing living things on Earth.

These trees are the largest individual trees in the world. They live in special groves on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. Because they are so special, they are listed as an endangered species. There are fewer than 80,000 of them left in their native home. You can find them in places like Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

These trees have a very interesting way of growing and staying safe. Their bark is thick and can protect them from forest fires. The sap inside the tree has tannic acid, which helps protect it from fire damage too. To grow new trees, they use seeds from small cones. These cones can stay closed for up to 20 years.

When a fire happens, the heat dries the cones so they can open. This lets the seeds fall out onto the ground. The fire also clears away other plants so the tiny new trees get plenty of sunlight.

People have wondered about the name of these trees for a long time. In 1868, a man named Josiah Whitney thought the name honored Sequoyah. Sequoyah was the person who invented the Cherokee writing system.

However, a study in 2012 found that this was likely a myth. It turns out an Austrian named Stephen L. Endlicher chose the name instead. He used the Latin word "sequi," which means "to follow." He chose this because the number of seeds in the cones follows a mathematical pattern.

Giant sequoias are famous for their incredible size and age.

They can grow to be very tall and have very wide trunks. The General Grant tree has one of the largest diameters at breast height. Some trees are incredibly old, living for over 3,200 years.

This makes them some of the oldest living things on our planet. In 2020, scientists even mapped their genome, which is the set of instructions for how they grow. Their genome was one of the largest ever recorded at that time.

Even though they usually live in California, you can see them in other places.

People have planted them all around the world as ornamental trees. Some groves even exist in the San Jacinto Mountains in Southern California. These trees are like giant anchors for the forest. They provide homes for more than 30 different types of birds. Animals like the Douglas squirrel also help them by dropping seeds while they eat.
