Redwoods are a special group of trees in the northern hemisphere. They belong to a family called Cupressaceae. This group includes the tallest and largest trees on Earth.

People often use them as beautiful ornamental trees in gardens. These amazing living things can live for thousands of years. They are some of the most notable trees in the world. Scientists study them to learn about the history of our planet.

There are three main groups, or genera, in this subfamily. The first is Sequoia, which grows along the coasts of California and Oregon. The second is Sequoiadendron, found on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The third group is Metasequoia, which lives in China. Metasequoia trees are deciduous, so they lose their leaves. They are smaller than the others but can live in cold climates. Only Sequoia and Sequoiadendron are known for being truly huge.

Scientists use many tools to study how these trees evolved. They look at physical shapes and also use molecular studies. Molecular studies look at the tiny instructions inside cells. Researchers like Yang et al. studied how Sequoia became a hexaploid. This means it has six sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two.

They used two genes called LFY and NLY to build family trees. Their work suggests Sequoia might be a hybrid. This happens when two different species merge to make a new one.

Redwoods have a very long and ancient history. The oldest known species is Sequoia jeholensis from the Jurassic period.

Some fossil wood from the Triassic in China looks like the Giant sequoia. This suggests the group might be even older. Long ago, redwoods grew in the Arctic Circle and Europe. They also lived in North America and throughout Asia and Japan. A cooling trend during the Eocene and Oligocene changed where they could live.

Today, these trees face many hard jobs to stay alive. They are all considered endangered by the IUCN Red List.

Logging and fire suppression are big threats to them. People also sometimes poach burls from the trees. In California, extreme wildfires recently destroyed one-fifth of all giant sequoias. Even in Britain, there are about 500,000 redwoods. Most of those were brought from the US during the Victorian era. We can learn much by watching how these giants survive.
