They include the tallest and largest trees in the world. These trees can live for thousands of years.

There are three main groups of redwoods. One group is called Sequoia. They grow near the coast in California and Oregon. Another group is called Sequoiadendron. These grow in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The third group is called Metasequoia. These grow in China. Metasequoia trees are different. They are deciduous, which means they lose their leaves. They also grow much smaller than the others. They can live in cold places.

Scientists study how these trees grew long ago. Some fossils show redwoods lived in the Jurassic period. They once grew in many places like Europe and Asia. Now, these trees face many dangers. Big fires can hurt them. People also cut them down. Some people even take burls from the trees. Because of this, these redwoods are endangered. This means they are at risk of disappearing.
