They grow on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Most of these trees live in California. There are fewer than 80,000 left in the wild. These trees can live for a very long time. One tree lived for over 3,200 years!

These trees have a special way to grow. They need fire to help them. The heat from a fire dries out the cones. This makes the scales open up. When the scales open, the seeds fall out.

The seeds need sun and good soil to grow. Fire also clears away other plants. This gives the tiny new trees more room to live.

Animals help the trees too. Some beetles lay eggs in the cones. This helps the cones dry out and open. Douglas squirrels also eat the green cones. As they eat, they drop seeds on the ground. This helps the seeds find a place to grow.
