The tree grows best in warm, wet places. It likes deep soil that drains well. It does not like cold or dry weather.

People use the wood for many jobs. The wood is soft and light. It also has a very nice smell. It can resist bugs and rot. This makes it great for building houses. People use it for furniture and boxes too. In the Azores islands, many of these trees grow. They were brought there in the mid-1800s. Now, they cover a large part of the land. Some trees are very old. One famous tree on Yakushima island may be thousands of years old. In Japan, these trees are often planted near shrines. They provide shade for people visiting these holy places.
