These trees love hot and dry summers. They also like mild, rainy winters. To survive, they have stout, shallow roots. These roots help them find food in the soil. The tree can grow in many kinds of soil. It can even survive long droughts.

The leaves are small and look like scales. They grow in thick, dark green sprays. The tree also makes small cones.

These cones hold seeds. They start out green. They turn brown after about 20 to 24 months.

Cypresses are very tough. They have low resin, which is a sticky sap. Because they have little sap, they do not catch fire easily. This helps them survive big forest fires. People use them in gardens and as windbreaks. They are also very important in many cultures.
