The Mediterranean cypress is a very special evergreen tree.

You might know it as the Italian or Tuscan cypress. It is a medium-sized tree that can grow 35 meters tall. These trees are very long-lived and can live for over 1,000 years. They are famous for their dark green, pointy shapes. This shape looks like a tall exclamation mark in the landscape. Many people love to plant them in gardens and parks.

This tree has a clever way of staying healthy. It grows best in places with hot, dry summers and rainy winters. To survive the heat, the tree has stout and shallow roots. These roots help it gather nutrients from the soil easily. It can live in both acidic and alkaline soils. The tree also grows its branches toward the light. Its leaves are tiny and look like small scales. These scales grow in thick, dark green sprays.

History shows that people have used this tree for a long time. In Iran, the tree is very sacred to the people. Some say the oldest cypress is the Sarv-e-Abarkooh in Iran. People claim it might even be 4,000 years old. In ancient stories, a boy named Cyparissus was turned into a cypress. This happened because he was so sad about losing a pet. The tree's sap is said to be like his tears. In the past, people also used the wood for harpsichords.

There are many interesting facts about how the tree works. The seed cones are oblong and about 25 to 40 mm long. These cones start out green and turn brown after 20 to 24 months. The male cones are small and release pollen in late winter. This pollen can cause allergies for some people. One amazing thing is that the tree is hard to burn. It has a low resin content, which is a sticky sap. Because it has little sap, it does not catch fire easily.

Because they are tough, these trees are very useful today. Scientists study them to see how they resist fire. In 2012, a fire in Andilla, Spain, burned 20,000 hectares of forest. However, 946 cypress trees there were almost all unharmed. This makes them great for creating firebreaks to stop wildfires. People also use the leaves in folk medicine. They use dried leaves to help with skin or nasal issues. The tree remains a beautiful part of many different lands.
