A pine is a special kind of evergreen tree or shrub. These plants belong to the genus Pinus. They are found all over the Northern Hemisphere. You might see them in huge cold forests called taiga. They also live in dry tropical forests and Mediterranean areas.

Many pines are very useful to people. We use their wood, called timber, to make many things. People even use pine nuts to make food like pesto. Some wines are even flavored with pine resin.

Pines have a very interesting way of growing. Their leaves are actually needles that grow in bunches. Scientists call these bunches fascicles. Most bunches have between two and five needles. These needles stay green all year long.

The trees also make woody cones to hold seeds. A single tree has both male and female cones. The small male cones release pollen in the spring. The larger female cones take a few years to mature. Each scale on a cone holds two seeds.

These trees are famous for living a very long time. Most pines live for 100 to 1,000 years. Some can live even longer than that. One tree is called Methuselah. It lives in the White Mountains of California. This tree is about 4,800 years old!

Another tree near Wheeler Peak was once 4,900 years old. This shows how strong and steady these plants can be.

Pines have a very old history on Earth. The pine family first appeared during the Jurassic period. The specific genus Pinus appeared during the Early Cretaceous. The oldest fossil found is named Pinus yorkshirensis. It was found in the Speeton Clay in England. This fossil is about 130 million years old.

In 1753, a scientist named Carl Linnaeus named the genus Pinus. He is the person who gave them their scientific name.

Nature has many ways to help pines grow. Some pines actually need forest fires to help them. Heat melts the resin that holds the cones shut. This is called serotiny. When the resin melts, the seeds can finally fall out. This helps new trees grow in the burnt ground.

Other animals help too. Birds like nutcrackers carry the seeds to new places. This helps the forest spread and stay healthy.
