The larch is a very special kind of tree.

Most trees with needles stay green all year long. However, larches are deciduous conifers. This means they drop their needles when the seasons change. They love to grow in cool parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Some live in lowland forests in the far north. Others grow high up in cold mountains. They are the most abundant genus of trees on Earth.

These trees have a very interesting way of growing. Their branches often grow in circles called whorls. They have two different kinds of shoots on their branches. Some shoots have needles in big, thick clusters. Other shoots have needles that grow one by one. The female cones are small and stand up straight. They take about four to seven months to grow after pollination. When they are ready, the scales spread apart. This lets the winged seeds fall out to grow.

People have studied these trees for a very long time. The English name for the larch was recorded in 1548. A botanist named William Turner wrote it down then. Later, a man named Philip Miller described the genus in 1754. Scientists have found that some larches are related to Douglas firs. These two groups split apart about 45 million years ago. Today, experts use DNA to learn more about them. This helps them see how different species are truly related.

Larches grow in many different places around the world. They live in North America, Europe, China, and Japan. One species, Larix gmelinii, grows very far north. It lives at 75 degrees north on the Taymyr Peninsula. In 1965, larches made up 40.2% of the forests in the Soviet Union. This was a huge amount of wood. The trees are very long-lived and can survive in tough soil. They are often the first trees to grow in new areas.

We use many parts of the larch in our daily lives. The wood is tough and lasts a long time. People use it for boatbuilding, fences, and garden furniture. It is even used for playground equipment. We can get rosin from the tree to use on violin bows. Some people use the essential oils for aromatherapy. Even the bark can be used as mulch for gardens.
