Chestnuts are special trees and shrubs in the beech family.

They grow in many temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere. These trees can be very different in size. The American chestnut can grow to be a giant in the forest. Other types, like chinkapins, stay small and look more like shrubs.

Some trees grow very straight and tall. Others, like the Japanese chestnut, spread out wide with many leaders. The leaves are long and have sharp teeth along the edges. Many people enjoy the edible nuts these trees produce.

Making nuts is a step-by-step way the tree works. In late spring, the trees grow long flowers called catkins.

Some catkins have only male flowers that make pollen. Other catkins have small female flowers near the twig. These female flowers grow into a prickly shell called a cupule, or a burr.

The burr holds one to seven nuts inside. When the nuts are ripe, the burr turns yellow-brown and splits open. This often happens after the burr falls to the ground. The nuts have a hard outer shell called a pericarpus. Under that is a thin skin called a pellicle.

Humans have used chestnuts for a very long time. People in Europe and the Near East have used them as a staple food for millennia. In fact, people have been growing them since around 2000 BC. During their many campaigns, Alexander the Great and the Romans planted chestnut trees across Europe. A Greek army even survived a retreat in 401–399 BC by eating their stores of chestnuts. The name chestnut comes from an old English term, "chesten nut." This word comes from the Old French word "chastain." This traces back to the Latin word Castanea.

Japanese chestnuts also have their own specific varieties. Some nuts are very large, like the Japanese varieties which can be around 3 centimeters. American chestnuts are usually much smaller, around 1 centimeter. Some varieties even have names like "marron" to show they have only one large nut.

Squirrels, deer, and wild boar all love to eat the nuts. Birds like jays and pigeons also find them useful for food. This makes the trees a great way to attract wildlife to an area. You might also see the beautiful leaves change color in the autumn. The European and American species have leaves that turn a striking yellow. This helps you spot them as the seasons change.
