Sprat

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sprats are small, oily fish that play a big role in the ocean. These fish are very active and swim all day long. They usually travel together in large groups called schools.

Because they are so active, they have a high metabolic rate. This means their bodies use energy very quickly. Sprats are also known for being very nutritious for people. They contain healthy fats that can help the heart and brain.

Life for a sprat depends a lot on the water around it. For example, the temperature of the water changes how they grow. It also affects how fast their bodies use energy. Young sprats start as eggs that hatch in about 15 days. The success of these eggs depends on things like water depth and salt levels. In the Baltic Sea, the water has become less salty lately. This happens because there is less water flowing in from the North Sea.

Scientists have studied different types of sprats for a long time. The European sprat was named by Linnaeus in 1758. Other species were named by researchers like Hector in 1872 and Klunzinger in 1879. There are five species that belong to the true sprat group. These include the New Zealand blueback sprat and the Falkland sprat. The Australian sprat and the New Zealand sprat are also part of this group.

There are many specific facts about these little fish. The European sprat can grow up to 16 centimeters long. It can live for about 6 years in the wild. The Falkland sprat can reach a maximum weight of 3.4 grams. Sprats in the Baltic Sea often live in the Bornholm Basin. They eat tiny animals called zooplankton to stay healthy. In the winter, they specifically eat a type of tiny creature called Pseudocalanus.

Sprats are a very important part of the ocean food web. They serve as a main food source for larger animals. For instance, big birds like the gannet need sprats to fly.

In the sea, large cod fish eat adult sprats for food. Interestingly, sprats also eat the eggs and larvae of cod. This shows how different animals are linked together in nature. Sprats even compete with herring fish for the same tiny food. They all look for the best zooplankton to help them survive.
