Clupeiformes

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Clupeiformes is a large group of ray-finned fish.

This group includes many important food fish. You might know them as herrings, anchovies, or sardines. These fish are very helpful to the ocean. They are known as forage fish. This means many other animals eat them. Most of these fish have shiny, silver bodies.

Their bodies are shaped like a spindle. This shape helps them move through water easily. They often swim together in large groups called schools.

These fish have a special way they work. They are called physostomes. This means they have a gas bladder. A gas bladder is a part that helps them float. In these fish, a tube connects the bladder to the gut.

Most of these fish do not have a lateral line. They still have eyes, fins, and scales. Most species eat tiny things called plankton. They filter the plankton from the water. They use parts called gill rakers to catch this food.

Scientists have studied the history of these fish. They used to be part of a group called Isospondyli. Now, most of those fish are in Clupeiformes.

They had a sister group called Ellimmichthyiformes. Those fish are now extinct. They lived during the Cretaceous and Paleogene times. These two groups lived near each other often. They looked very much alike in their body shapes. Some extinct fish later grew very different bodies.

We can find clues about them in fossils. Some fossils come from South America. These fossils are from the Early Cretaceous period. They belong to a group called Clupeioidei. This tells us these fish split into groups very long ago.

Today, there are about 405 different species. These species belong to ten different families. Some families include the Engraulidae, which are anchovies. The Clupeidae family includes herrings and sprats. There are also wolf herrings in the Chirocentridae family.

Many things you see in the ocean link to these fish. You might see sardines in a grocery store. You might see schools of fish in a movie.

These fish are a big part of how nature works. They turn tiny plankton into food for bigger animals. This helps keep the ocean healthy. Their silver bodies help them hide in the light. Learning about them helps us understand the sea. It is amazing how one group of fish supports so much life.
