Clupeiformes

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Clupeiformes is a large group of fish.

It includes herrings, anchovies, and sardines. These fish are very important for food. Most have silver, shiny bodies. Their bodies are shaped like a spindle. This shape helps them swim well. Many of these fish swim in large groups called schools.

Most species eat plankton. Plankton are tiny things that float in the water. These fish use gill rakers to catch food. Gill rakers are parts in their gills that filter the water. These fish are also physostomes. This means they have a gas bladder with a tube to their gut. A gas bladder is a part that helps them float.

Scientists have found fossils of these fish. Some fossils come from South America. They are from the Early Cretaceous time. This was a very long time ago. There were also extinct fish that looked like them. We call those Ellimmichthyiformes. These two groups lived together in the past. There are about 405 species in this group today.
