They belong to a group called Engraulidae. Most species live in the ocean. Some live in brackish water. Brackish water is a mix of salt and fresh water. Some live in fresh water in South America. They live in many oceans. They are often found in temperate waters. These are areas that are not too hot or too cold.

Anchovies are filter-feeders. This means they eat by straining food from the water. They swim with their mouths open. Water passes through their mouths and out their gills. Tiny parts called gill rakers catch food. The food then goes into their throat.

People also eat anchovies. They often salt them to make a strong flavor. This is called curing. They are used in many sauces.
