Most of these fish live in the ocean. Some live in fresh water. They have a fusiform body. This means their bodies are shaped like a spindle. This shape helps them swim very fast. They use this speed to catch food. It also helps them run from predators. Sharks and birds like to eat them.

These fish eat tiny things called plankton. They do not have big teeth. They do not need to bite or tear food. Instead, they use gill rakers. These are small parts in their gills. They act like a sieve to catch food. As the fish grow, they can eat larger things. This is because their gill rakers get bigger too.

Clupeids live in large groups called shoals. They may even form bait balls. This helps them stay safe.

Some species lay many eggs. They can lay up to 200,000 eggs! The parents do not watch the eggs or the babies. The tiny fish live among the plankton until they grow up.
