Gadiformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Gadiformes are a group of fish. They include cod, hakes, and pollock. Many people catch these fish for food. Most live in the salty sea. Most like cold or temperate water. Some live in very deep water.

These fish have special parts. Their fins have no spines. Their pelvic fins are below or in front of their pectoral fins. They are also physoclists. This means their swim bladder has no tube to the mouth. A swim bladder is a part that helps them float.

Some of these fish live in fresh water. The burbot is a true fresh water fish. Other types can enter fresh water too. For example, the Pacific tomcod can swim there. Some Atlantic tomcod live in fresh water their whole lives.

These fish come in many sizes. Codlets are very small. The Atlantic cod can grow quite large. We have found fossils of old gadiforms. One lived in the United States long ago. Another was found in Greenland. These fish have been around for a very long time.
