These fish like to stay in deep water during the day. At night, they swim to shallower depths. Hake are predators. This means they hunt for food. They eat prey found on the sea floor.

Hake have a special way of growing. First, they lay eggs. These eggs float on the surface of the sea. The larvae, or baby fish, grow there. Later, the babies move down to the bottom of the sea.

Many people catch hake to eat. People buy them as fresh fillets or frozen steaks. Some hake are even smoked or salted.

In some places, there are fewer hake than before. This is often due to overfishing. This means people catch too many fish. In Argentina, many adult hake have disappeared. In Namibia, the government uses strict rules. They have closed seasons to help the fish grow back. This helps keep the hake population healthy.
