They are important fish for people to catch and eat.

Hake follow a specific way of living and growing. During the day, they stay in deep water. At night, they swim to shallower depths. They are predators that eat prey near the sea floor. First, the fish lay eggs that float on the surface. These eggs become larvae, which are baby fish. After some time, the baby hake move to the bottom. They prefer to live in depths of less than 500 meters.

People have known about hake for a long time. A book from 1885 called Fishermens' Guide tells an interesting story. It says hake might have moved from Ireland to the United States. This happened as people moved from Ireland to America. In the United States, they were found near New York and Boston. These fish were called "stock fish" or "poor Johns." In Europe, they are very common in Ireland, England, and France.

Many different kinds of hake live in different places. The Argentine hake lives near Argentina. The Benguela hake is found off South Africa. European hake live in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. In the North Pacific, you can find Gayi hake and North Pacific hake. Some hake are caught using a method called trawling. Others are caught with longlines. In Namibia, the government uses strict rules to protect the fish. They have closed seasons in September and October to help the fish grow back.

Finding good hake is important for the food industry.
