It belongs to the cod family, known as Gadidae. This fish is very important for people who fish for food. In northern Europe, people eat haddock in many ways. They eat it fresh, frozen, or even smoked. Some special smoked kinds include Finnan haddie and Arbroath smokie.

Haddock are special because they are the only species in their own group. This group is called the genus Melanogrammus.

This fish has a very specific look that helps people identify it. Its body is long and tapers at the ends. The top of the fish is dark grey or black. The bottom part is a dull silvery white. A dark line called a lateral line curves along its side.

Most importantly, it has a black oval spot near its fin. This spot looks like a thumbprint. Because of this, people sometimes call it the "Devil's thumbprint." The name Melanogrammus actually means "black letter" or "black signal" in Greek.

Haddock live near the bottom of the ocean. Scientists call these bottom-dwelling fish demersal. They like to swim over sand, gravel, rock, or shells. They prefer water temperatures between 2 and 11 degrees Celsius.

These fish grow at different speeds depending on where they live. A one-year-old fish might be 25 centimeters long. By the time they are 13, they can reach 75 centimeters. Most haddock live for about 14 years. They reach adulthood when males are 4 and females are 5.

People have studied these fish for a long time. A scientist named Carolus Linnaeus first described the haddock in 1758. Later, in 1862, Theodore Nicholas Gill created the genus name. Haddock are caught in huge amounts every year. In the eastern Atlantic, landings were between 200,000 and 350,000 tonnes from 1980 to 2017.

In North America, they are often caught near Cape Cod. Scientists work hard to manage how many fish are caught. This helps make sure there are always enough haddock in the sea.

You might recognize haddock if you have ever eaten fish and chips. It is one of the most popular fish for that meal. Haddock also play a big role in the ocean food web. Small baby fish eat tiny creatures called copepods. As they grow up, they eat bigger things like sea urchins and worms.

Larger fish and even seals eat the grown haddock. It is a very busy life in the deep, cold ocean.
