During the spawning season, they swim in circles to lay eggs. These eggs float in the water as plankton. After eight to 23 days, the eggs hatch into tiny larvae. The young cod stay in the water for ten weeks. During this time, they grow much larger and heavier. Eventually, they move to the seabed to find food. They start eating small things like crabs and isopods. By their second year, they have grown quite a bit.

Scientists have studied these fish for a very long time.

A scientist named Linnaeus named the Atlantic cod in 1758. He also described a special type of cod in the Baltic Sea. Other species like the Pacific cod were named later in 1810. Many different fish are called "cod" by people in markets. Some are true cod, but others are just related. For example, haddock and whiting are in the same family. However, they are not part of the Gadus genus.

There are many important facts to know about their bodies.

Atlantic cod have three rounded fins on their top side. They also have a white line running down their side. Their skin can be greenish or sandy brown. This color helps them hide in the rocky ocean floor. The Atlantic cod can even change its color. It can look gray-green or reddish brown depending on depth. Pacific cod are usually smaller and darker than their Atlantic cousins. They can grow up to 119 cm long.
