life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Grenadiers are large fish that live in the deep sea. Many people call them rattails. They have big heads and large eyes. Their bodies taper to a very thin tail. This tail looks like the tail of a rat.

These fish live from the Arctic to the Antarctic. They can be found at very great depths. Some live near shipwrecks or hot vents on the sea floor. Grenadiers are often brown or black. They can grow to many different sizes.

To find food, they use many tools. They have a lateral line system to feel their surroundings. They also have chemosensory barbels. These are small parts under the chin that help them sense things. They eat small fish and shrimp.

Some species have photophores. These are organs that make light. Other fish use muscles to strum their swim bladders. This makes sound. This sound might help them find mates.

Grenadiers lay over 100,000 tiny eggs. These eggs have oil droplets to help them float. They float to warmer water to grow. The young fish live in shallow water. They move to the deep sea as they get older. Some species live for 56 years or more.
