life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some fish have long, thin bodies. They have small heads. These fish are called Ophidiiformes. Most have smooth scales or no scales at all. They have a long fin on their back. Their bottom fin often joins their tail fin.

These fish live in many places. Most live in warm water. Some live in fresh water. Many live in the deep, dark sea. One fish, Abyssobrotula galatheae, lives in a deep trench. This fish lives in the Puerto Rico Trench.

Most of these fish lay eggs. However, some are viviparous. This means they give birth to live young. The fish can be different sizes. Some are very small. Others are much longer.

We know about these fish from old fossils. One fossil is named Pastorius. It lived in Italy a long time ago. Other fossils include Ampheristus. These lived in the United States and Germany.
