Gasterosteoidei

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Gasterosteoidei is a group of small fish. They include sticklebacks and their relatives. These fish live in the northern part of the world. Most live in cold Arctic or temperate waters. Some live in salt water. Others live in fresh water. Some live in water that is a bit of both.

Many of these fish have hard plates on their skin. These plates act like armor. They can grow in rows along the body. Some plates grow from the fins. These fish also have very small mouths. Their upper jaw can move forward. This is called a protractile jaw.

Male fish use a special glue to build nests. Their kidneys make a sticky chemical. They use this to hold plants together. This helps them make a home. The largest one is the sea stickleback. It is still a small fish. Fossil fish show these groups have been around for a long time. We have found fossils from the Middle Miocene. This was a long time ago.
