Most gobies are benthic fish. This means they live on or near the bottom. Many do not have a gas bladder. A gas bladder is a part that helps fish float. Without it, they must stay on the floor. Some gobies have special pelvic fins. These fins work like a suction cup. They help the fish climb up rocks and waterfalls.

Some gobies live in a special way. They live with other tiny sea animals. This is called a symbiotic relationship. For example, some gobies live in holes with shrimp. Other gobies act as cleaner fish. They help keep reefs healthy. There are many families in this group. One is the Oxudercidae. This family includes mudskippers. They can even stay out of the water for a long time.
