Gobioidei

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Gobioidei are a huge group of fish. Many people simply call them gobies. This group is one of the largest types of ray-finned fish. There are about 2,211 different species in this group. They are divided into seven main families. Most of these fish are small. They often have large heads and bodies that taper at the end.

Most gobies are benthic fish. This means they live on or near the bottom. Many do not have a gas bladder. A gas bladder is a part that helps fish float. Without it, they must stay on the floor. Some gobies have special pelvic fins. These fins work like a suction cup. They help the fish climb up rocks and waterfalls. This allows them to live far from the ocean.

Scientists have studied how these fish changed over time. The earliest known fossil is called Carlomonnius. It was found at a site in Italy. This fossil belongs to the Early Eocene age. Other fossils were found in India. These were tiny ear bones called otoliths. These fossils come from the Cambay Formation in Gujarat. They show that gobies have been around for a very long time.

There are many different families of gobies. The Oxudercidae family has about 600 species. This family includes mudskippers. Some mudskippers can even stay out of the water for a long time. The Gobiidae family is also very large. These fish are often found in the tropical Indo-West Pacific. Some Gobiidae live in the ocean. Others live in freshwater on islands.

Some gobies have very interesting ways of living. They often form a symbiotic relationship with other animals. This means they live closely with them to help each other. About 120 species do this. For example, some gobies live in holes with shrimp. Other gobies act as cleaner fish. They help keep coral reefs healthy. This shows how important these small fish are to the sea.
