life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Loaches are a huge group of freshwater fish. They are part of a group called Cobitoidei. You can find these fish in rivers and creeks. They live in many places like Eurasia and northern Africa. Most loaches live on the bottom of the water. This way of living is called being benthic.

Because they are so diverse, they come in many shapes. Some loaches look like tiny eels. Others have bodies that are quite stout. Most have long, narrow bodies with small scales. These scales are often hidden under their skin. Many loaches also have whisker-like parts near their mouths called barbels.

Some loaches even have a special spine. This spine is located below the eye. It can move out from under the eye. This feature is found in the family Cobitidae. It is also found in the genus Acantopsis. Scientists use bone shapes to study how these fish are related.

Learning about loaches has taken a long time. Carl Linnaeus described the genus Cobitis in 1758. At the start of the 1900s, only two families were known. Later, scientists like Fowler and Hora found more families. They found the Balitoridae and Gastromyzontidae families. Some families were only moved to their own group in 2002.

There are 1,249 known species of these fish. They belong to 107 different genera. These are split into 9 different families. One family is called Botiidae, which are pointface loaches. Another is Nemacheilidae, known as brook loaches. Some loaches are even blind because they live in caves.

People interact with loaches in many ways. Some people keep them in aquariums at home. Popular types include the clown loach and the kuhli loach. These fish eat food that sinks to the bottom. In East and Southeast Asia, some loaches are food. People can find them in local markets. The oriental weatherfish is even found in the United States.
