Mudskippers are a very special group of fish. Most fish stay under the water to live. However, mudskippers are amphibious. This means they can live both in the water and on land. They belong to a group called the Oxudercinae. There are 25 different species living today. These fish are famous for their unusual bodies. They can survive for a long time outside of the water.

Moving on land is a unique way these fish work. Their side fins, called pectoral fins, are located far forward. These fins are jointed and work much like arms or legs. This allows them to crawl from place to place. They can even skip across muddy ground. This movement is why they have their common name. They can also leap by pushing with their tails. Some can even climb low tree branches or scrub.

Breathing while out of water is a clever process. Mudskippers keep a bubble of water inside their large gill chambers. This keeps their gills wet so they can work. They also use cutaneous respiration. This is a way of breathing through their skin. They can also take in oxygen through their mouth and throat. They must stay wet to do this. To keep their eyes wet, they have a special blink. A membrane called a dermal cup rises to cover the eye.

Many mudskippers live in burrows in the mud. The males dig these holes in soft sediment. These burrows have smooth and vaulted ceilings. The holes help the fish stay at the right temperature. They also help the fish hide from predators. The burrows are very important for making new life. Females follow males into the burrow to lay hundreds of eggs. After the eggs are fertilized, the male stays to guard them.
