Lizardfishes are a type of fish that live in the sea. They are benthic animals. This means they live on the bottom of the water. They live in warm waters around the world. Most stay in shallow areas near the coast. Some live in estuaries. These are places where fresh and salt water mix.

These fish have long and thin bodies. Their heads look a bit like a lizard. They have many sharp teeth. Some even have teeth on their tongues! Most lizardfish are small. But the largest ones can grow quite long. They like to live in sandy areas. Their colors help them hide in the sand.

Young lizardfish are different. They can swim freely in the water. They have skin with no scales. Their skin is also clear. You can see black spots in their guts through their skin.

There are many kinds of lizardfish. Some belong to the group Synodus. This group has six species. Other fish belong to the group Saurida. That group has four species. One kind is named Trachinocephalus. It only has one species. Some lizardfish lived a long time ago. They are now extinct.
