Viviparous brotula

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Viviparous brotulas are a family of fish called Bythitidae. Most of these fish give birth to live young. This is why they have that name. Some species might not have live babies, though.

These fish often look like small tadpoles. Most stay small, but some grow much larger. They live in many places. Many live near warm coasts in tropical oceans. Some live in cold water. Others live very deep in the sea. One kind lives near thermal vents. These are spots on the ocean floor that are very hot.

A few kinds live in dark caves. Some live in fresh water. Others live in brackish water, which is a mix of fresh and salt water.

Scientists find new kinds of these fish often. Since 2002, they have found over 110 new species. In 2005, scientists found 26 new species in one paper. In 2007, they found 20 more. This family is very big and still growing.
