They live on the bottom of the sea. They can be found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Some live near volcanic slopes. These slopes are covered in manganese.

Sea toads have large, round bodies. They have short tails and small, spiny scales. One kind of sea toad has a special fin. This fin acts like a lure. It glows with light to help them hunt. This is called bioluminescence, which means making light from the body.

These fish do not move very much. They are mostly sedentary, which means they stay in one place. They wait for food to come near them. They can even go a long time without eating. This is because they have a very efficient way of breathing. They take in a lot of water at once. They can hold this water in their gills for a long time. This helps them save power.

Some sea toads use their fins to walk. They can even walk backwards on the seafloor. This helps them hunt and move around.
