Footballfish

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Footballfish live in the deep, dark parts of the ocean. They live in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. They also live in the Southern Ocean. There are 23 species in this group.

Females and males look very different. This is called sexual dimorphism. This means the two sexes have different shapes. Females are large and round. They have a special part called an esca. This is a light-making part on their head. Tiny bacteria live inside the esca. These bacteria give off light to attract food. The female eats fish, squid, and crustaceans. Her teeth curve backward to keep prey from escaping.

Males are much smaller than females. They use large nostrils to find a female. These nostrils are part of their olfactory system. This system helps them smell. Once a male finds a female, he attaches to her. He does not fuse with her body. He uses special teeth to hold on. This makes him a free-living male.
