Some fish carry their own lights. We call them flashlight fish. These fish have special organs under their eyes. These organs use bioluminescence, which means they make light. Tiny bacteria live inside these light parts. The fish can turn the lights off. They use a dark lid to hide them. They can also pull the lights into a pouch. These lights help them in many ways. They use light to talk to other fish. They use it to find prey. They also use it to hide from predators.

Flashlight fish live in warm ocean waters. They are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. At night, they eat small crustaceans. These are tiny sea creatures. Most of these fish live in deep water. Some species swim near coral reefs at night. It is hard for people to study them. This is because they are hard to catch. There are many types of these fish. Some live in the Pacific Ocean. Others live in the Red Sea. Some live in the Caribbean Sea.
