Myctophiformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Myctophiformes are a group of fish that live in the deep sea.

Most of these fish are lanternfishes. There are 252 species of lanternfishes. They belong to a family called Myctophidae. Another group is called blackchins. These fish belong to the family Neoscopelidae. There are only six species of blackchins.

These fish have many special parts. They have photophores. These are tiny organs that make light. They also have very large eyes. These eyes look out to the sides. This helps them see in the dark. Their mouths are large and sit at the tip of their nose. They also have a small fin called an adipose fin.

Scientists are still studying how these fish are related to others. Some fish in this group lived a long time ago. They are now extinct. We know about them from the Late Cretaceous period. This was a time many millions of years ago.
