Myctophiformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Myctophiformes are a special group of ray-finned fishes.

Most of these fish live in the deep sea. They are very important because they are quite common. One large group is the lanternfishes, known as Myctophidae. There are over 30 genera in this family. They also include about 252 different species.

Another group is called the blackchins, or Neoscopelidae. This family only has six species in three genera.

These fish have many interesting body parts. They live in the deep, open parts of the ocean. Most have photophores, which are organs that make light. Their bodies are thin and pressed from the sides. They often have very large eyes. These eyes usually point straight out to the sides.

Their mouths are also quite large. The mouth sits at the very tip of the snout. It can open wide, even below the eyes. They also have a small fin called an adipose fin.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. The name Myctophiformes comes from old words. It uses Greek words for nose and serpent. It also uses the Latin word for form. This describes their long and slender shape.

They have a heavy-headed look too. Some fish like these lived long ago. The Sardinioididae family is now extinct. They lived during the Late Cretaceous period.

There are many specific numbers for these fish. Most myctophiforms have eight rays in their pelvic fin. Their branchiostegal rays are usually between six and 12.

The genus Neocassandra lived in the Late Paleocene. Scientists use molecular data to study them. This data helps show how they are related to others. Some researchers link them to the Lampriformes. Others suggest a group called Scopelomorpha.

Learning about these fish helps us understand the ocean. They are part of a huge group of fishes. This group is called the Teleostei. Some scientists call them Ctenosquamata. This name links them to other spiny-rayed fishes.

Scientists are still working to group them perfectly. The way they relate to other fish is still being studied. It is a big job for modern science. Every new discovery helps us see the deep sea better.
