These fish live in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. They can be found in tropical, subtropical, and temperate waters. Their bodies have a very special shape. They look like a hatchet tool. The middle part of the body looks like a blade. The tail part looks like a handle. This shape helps them live in the deep ocean.

These fish use a clever trick to hide from predators. They have light-making parts called photophores. They use these to perform counter-illumination. This means they match the light coming from above. The light from the surface shines down through the water. By matching that light, the fish does not look dark from below. This helps them stay safe in the deep.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. The name for the subfamily comes from Ancient Greek words. The Greek word "stérnon" means breast. The word "ptýx" means a fold or a crease. These names describe the shape of the fish's chest.

There are about 40 different species in this group. They belong to three main groups called genera. These are Argyropelecus, Polyipnus, and Sternoptyx.

There are many facts about how these fish look. The group Argyropelecus has seven species. The Polyipnus group is much larger with 32 species. The Sternoptyx group has four species. Some fish, like the giant hatchetfish, can grow quite large. Others, like Polyipnus danae, are very small.

They live at depths between 50 and 1,500 meters. Their eyes are large and often point upward. This helps them see the shapes of prey above them.

Even fossils tell us about these fish. We know about four fossil groups from the past. One is Eosternoptyx from Iran. Another is Polyipnoides from Georgia. We also find Horbatshia from the Carpathians. Finally, there is Discosternon from Italy.
