Viperfish

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Viperfish are amazing fish that live in the deep, dark ocean. They live in the twilight zone, also called the mesopelagic zone. This is a place where very little sunlight reaches.

These fish belong to the genus Chauliodus. They are found in tropical and temperate oceans all around the world. Some viperfish live in the Mediterranean Sea or the Adriatic Sea. Others live in the Pacific Ocean or near the Greek waters. They are very important parts of the deep sea ecosystem.

These fish have many special ways to survive in the dark. They use light organs called photophores to glow. They use tiny bacteria inside them to make this light.

One light is on a long fin. The fish swings this light to lure prey closer to its mouth. Other lights are on their bellies. This is called counter-illumination. It helps them hide from predators by matching the dim sunlight above. Their teeth are also very special. They are long and needle-like. The teeth are so big they could hit the fish's brain if they were not lined up.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. One species, Chauliodus sloani, was named by Bloch and Schneider in 1801. There are nine different species of viperfish living today. Some were named by scientists like Garman in 1899 or Regan and Trewavas in 1929. We even know about fossil viperfish from a long time ago. These fossils come from the Late Miocene period. Some were found in California and others on Sakhalin Island.

There are many interesting facts about how viperfish grow. A Chauliodus sloani can be about 35 centimeters long. They can also weigh about 150 grams. These fish have silvery scales in five rows. These scales can fall off very easily. Their eyes stay the same size as they grow. Most fish have one layer of light sensors in their eyes. However, viperfish have many rows of these cells. This helps them see in the dark.

Many viperfish move up and down in the ocean to find food. This is called diel vertical migration. They swim toward the surface at night to eat. They can handle very big changes in water temperature. The temperature can change by as much as 12 degrees in one day. They eat things like lanternfishes and tiny shrimp called krill. Their bodies are built to eat large meals. They have a stretchy stomach and skin to hold big prey. This helps them get enough energy in the deep sea.
